About Chunya District Council
Chunya District Council is located in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania, covering an area of approximately 17,505 square kilometers. With a population of over 344,000 people (2022 census), the council administers two divisions—Kiwanja and Lupa—comprising 20 wards, with Chunya town as its administrative headquarters.
The district is predominantly driven by agriculture, employing nearly 87% of the population. Recent initiatives have focused on expanding commercial farming and improving rural infrastructure, including:
Allocation of over 52,000 acres for farming in villages such as Nkung’ungu, Lualaje, and Mapogoro
Dedicated 50,000 acres for soya cultivation
Investment of TZS 250 million in grain storage facilities
Drilling of 23 water wells across 19 villages, improving water coverage from 26% (2020) to over 50% (2025)
The district also holds a strong position in gold production, ranking second in the country, with ongoing efforts to increase transparency in the sector and improve infrastructure, including the 72 km Chunya–Makongolosi–Mbeya road. Key economic activities include agriculture, mining, beekeeping, and tourism, offering vast opportunities for employment and development.
