About Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH)
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) is Tanzania’s leading tertiary and super-specialised healthcare institution. Strategically structured into nine directorates, MNH offers a combined bed capacity of 2,178, with 1,570 beds at the main Upanga Hospital and 608 beds at the Mloganzila facility, located 23 kilometers from the main hospital. MNH provides daily services to 2,000–3,000 outpatients and 1,500–2,000 inpatients, solidifying its reputation as the nation’s premier referral and teaching hospital.
The history of MNH dates back to the early 1900s, formerly known as Sewahaji Hospital. Through the decades, the hospital evolved, adopting the names Princess Margaret Hospital in 1956, Muhimbili Hospital post-independence in 1961, and later Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC). It was officially established as Muhimbili National Hospital under the MNH Act No. 5 of 2000 following its separation from MMC in 2004. This act also paved the way for the formation of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), which now operates independently.
